Wewoka is the county seat of Seminole County and was historically the capital of the Seminole Nation after the Civil War. The name means 'Barking Water' in Creek. Seminole is the largest city in the county, located about 12 miles southwest of Wewoka.
Seminole County was historically the Seminole Nation reservation, and today much of the land remains tribal trust property, restricted Indian lands, or dependent Indian communities. The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma retains jurisdiction over these areas. Process servers should be aware that service involving tribal members or within restricted lands may require coordination with Seminole Nation legal authorities.
The Greater Seminole Field, discovered in 1923-1926, was one of the most important oil fields ever found and was briefly the world's largest oil-producing region. It contained an estimated 822 million barrels of oil across 39 separate pools. During the peak, the county's population tripled as 20,000 oil workers flooded in.
Seminole County is part of Oklahoma's 22nd Judicial District, which also includes Hughes County. The district court is located in the historic Seminole County Courthouse at 120 S. Wewoka Ave in Wewoka.
While oil was historically dominant, today's economy includes manufacturing (Latham Pool Products operates a fiberglass pool manufacturing facility), education (Seminole State College), healthcare (Wewoka Indian Health Center and East Central Oklahoma Family Health Center), tribal gaming operations, agriculture, and retail. The county's median household income is approximately the required statutory amount.
The Seminole County Courthouse at 120 S. Wewoka Ave was originally built in 1927 and expanded in 1939 with a Works Progress Administration project. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
